The Operational Research Society of Nepal (ORSN) is the organization to bring everyone related to the venture in single platform. The ORSN Conference 2012 provides opportunity for all the related persons to interact the theories and applications of OR and its related areas and to interact about their research on these field.

Nepal: Destination 2012

Nepal is known for the world's top roof where Mount Everest is standing like a crown of the nation. Out of ten topmountains in the World, eight lies in Nepal. In addition to being the birth place of Lord Buddha and the land of living Goddess, Nepal is also synonymous of natural beauty and spectacular landscape of green hills and white-mountain ranges.

The Operational Research Society of Nepal (ORSN)

Established on February 1, 2007, Operational Research Society of Nepal (ORSN) has aspired to work to capitalize the applicability of Operational Research in the related fields and also to develop a common platform for the operations management, information management and management science professionals to advocate the applicability of the operational research for sustainable development. ORSN tries to establish systematic interchange of information on sustainable development and continuously pursuing many activities there by conducting trainings, workshops, consultancy, research and publications services.

ORSN is on the way to become the member of International Federation of Operational Research Society (IFORS) and the regional Asia pacific Operations Research Society (APORS). This is a great opportunity for ORSN to step in international arena to acquire international exposure in operations research (OR) field. Moreover, ORSN, with its wide network of members has forged a strategic link with the IFORS to share the applicability of OR and replicate them in Nepalese environment in building stronger access of OR in various sectors.

Objective of Conference

Main aim of the ORSN Conference 2012 is to provide an appropriate platform for academicians, professionals and practitioners of Operations Research and its related areas in various sectors, sharing experiences, interaction and networking with OR experts within the nation and from around the world.

Abstract Submission

The abstract should be typed in English, and should not include any mathematical notations. Each submission must contain the following:

# Paper/proposal title

# Abstract of not more than 200 words

# Author(s) name(s), Organization, full mailing address, email address, with an indication of author(s) presenting the paper

# Topic of paper (at most three, chosen from the Conference Topics List) and additional topics if not included in thelist.

The organizing committee reserves the right to accept or reject the abstract

Keynote, Plenary and Invited Speakers

Prominent OR practitioners, academicians and business leaders will be invited by the organizers to deliver keynote speeches, plenary and to participate in the panel discussions. Great personalities of Operations Research area around the world have accepted to grace the event.

Prof. Dr. Arbinda Tripathy

Prof. Tripathy has been associated with IIM Ahmedabad and has been Dean of Vinod Gupta School of Management, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Director of L&T Institute of Project Management, Vadodara and Institute of Petroleum Management, Gandhinagar (IPMG) He was Visiting Professor, of University of Cape Town, South Africa and Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. Prof. Tripathy was Member Board of Directors in Techno-solutions (I) Ltd., BEML Limited and GP Textiles Ltd.

Dr. Tripathy held the position of Vice President of Operational Research Society of India (ORSI) for 1986 to 1988 and again held the position of President of ORSI since 1989. 

He was Editor of OR FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES Newsletter, published by IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies), from January 1998 to December 2002. He was also Editor-in-Chief, OPSEARCH, Journal of the Operational Research Society of India, January 2000 to March 2002.

Prof Tripathy is honored by various awards, Third World Prize in 1993 by The International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), XIII World Conference on Operations Research at LISBON, Portugal, "The Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountant's Fellowship" by Association of Commonwealth Universities at London School of Economics & Political Science; from September - December 1990, "Indo - EEC Exchange fellowship" at London Business School. January - June 1990, British Council Visitorship - August 1981 and April 1989, OSFAS Award British Council - 1975 - 76, J.N. Tata Endowment Award - 1975 - 76 and National Scholarship, Government of India - 1961.

Dr. Elise del Rosario, Immediate Past President, IFORS

Elise del Rosario has displayed a missionary zeal in promoting the practice of Operations Research both locally and internationally. Even as an OR anal y s t wi th San Miguel Corporation, she had visualized the formation of an OR national society, which was made a reality in 1987. OR in the Philippines was again noticed as the San Miguel OR group she manages won the ORSA Prize, alongside Fedex.

Her efforts were recognized by the international community, which elected her as the first woman and only second Asian to the presidency of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), a 50-year old association of 48 national societies and 30,000 individual members founded by UK, USA and France. Even as an active practitioner, she maintains links with the academe, acting as referee for international journals and serving in the editorial boards of ITOR, JORS, among others.

She obtained her undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of the Philippines, graduate degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok, Thailand), and was an International Research Fellow at the Stanford Research Institute (California, USA). 

Dr. Subhash Datta,

Director of NIILM CMS at Greater Noida, is a life member of the Operational Research Society of India and an International Fellow of Operational Research (FOR). He has nine books to his credit and has published more than 55 articles in refereed national and international journals. In 1990, he received the "Sir Charles Goodeve Gold Medal" for the most outstanding paper (Strategy for Development of Backward Areas) in the Journal of the Operational Research Society, U.K. He is the first recipient of the coveted award from a developing country.

He has published articles in various national and international Journals. Before joining NIILM CMS, he was with NIBM (Bombay), BITS (Pilani), CASAD (Pune), NSDART (LBSNAA, Mussoorie), IMI (New Delhi), MDI (Gurgaon) and Founder Director at JIM Jaipur. He was a research guide for the M.Sc (OR) program of the University of Sussex, University of Strathclyde and University of Southampton, UK.

He was a plenary speaker on Sustainable Development at the ICORD, held at Brazil in August 2007. He was an Organising Committee Member and the Chair for IFORS Prize for OR in Development at IFORS 2011 held at Melbourne Australia during 10-15 July 2011. He is invited to Chair the session on OR in Developing Countries at EURO 2012 at Vilnius, Lithuania, 8-11 July 2012.

Prof. Dr. James Cochran

James J. Cochran is in the Bank of Ruston Barnes, Thompson, & Thurmon Endowed Research Professor of Q u a n t i t a t i v e A n a l y s i s a n d Computational Modeling at Louisiana Tech University. He holds Ph.D. (from the University of Cincinnati). He has been a Visiting Scholar with Stanford University, the University of South Africa, and the Universidad de Talca.

Professor Cochran's research interests include sample based and Bayesian optimization, statistical methods (particularly general linear models), and statistical learning. He has published over thirty papers in peer reviewed academic journals. Professor Cochran has served as a consultant for many national, international and multinational organizations including UNESCO; CARE; and many others. 

Professor Cochran was General Chair of the 2005 INFORMS Conference. He was President of INFORMED 2002-2005 and was the founding chair of the INFORMS Section on OR in SpORts. He chaired the ASA section on Statistics in Sports in 2005 and received the section's Significant Contributor to Statistics in Sports Award in 2008. He was a founding co-chair of Statistics Without Borders, and he established and has organized INFORMS' Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium series and annual Case Competition.

Professor Cochran also established the annual INFORMS/IFORS International Education Workshop series and has co-chaired workshops in Montevideo, Cape Town, Cartagena, Dar es Salaam, Jaipur, and Nairobi, Buenos Aires, through this initiative. In 2008 Professor Cochran received the INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice, and in 2010 he received the Mu Sigma Rho Statistical Education Award. In 2011he was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
